About this role

This role is fully remote and designed to offer guided support and real-world experience to a student or early-career professional. Perfect for building experience and networking. No resume is required and the role is not compensated.

Curastem is a nonprofit building AI-powered mentorship and career guidance tools for people navigating education and work with limited support. As a Software Engineering extern, you will help build and improve real software used by real people, while learning how production systems are designed, implemented, and maintained.

This externship offers the opportunity to invent and test new interaction patterns, develop taste in system design, and learn how technical decisions connect directly to customer problems. You will have meaningful autonomy to own small, well-scoped engineering tasks, collaborate closely with product, design, and data, and contribute code that supports Curastem’s core tools and internal workflows.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain small production-ready frontend or full-stack features

  • Contribute to scalable services, APIs, and data pipelines that power Curastem's core experience

  • Debug, test, and improve performance, reliability, and usability of existing features

  • Use AI-assisted development tools to explore ideas, accelerate implementation, and improve code quality

  • Learn and apply best practices in TypeScript, React, APIs, and AI integration

  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and learning sessions focused on writing clear, maintainable code


Who You Are

  • A student or early-career engineer interested in software engineering or applied systems building

  • Open to working with AI-assisted tools and modern web technologies

  • Familiar with building interactive web applications, either through projects, coursework, or internships

  • Curious about how software works in production, including performance and user experience

  • Able to learn quickly, take feedback, and ask thoughtful questions

  • Clear communicator who enjoys collaborating with others

  • Able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English
