Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming part of how teens learn, explore ideas, and ask questions. Teens do not use AI the same way adults do. They ask different kinds of questions, interpret answers differently, and are more influenced by tone, framing, and implied permission.

The Safe-Child-LLM benchmark tested models using 200 child- and teen-specific prompts. These prompts were split between children aged 7–12 and teens aged 13–17. The evaluation did not only check whether a model refused to answer. It also measured whether the refusal was clear, appropriate for the teen's age, and unlikely to cause harm.

Across many models, the results were similar. Systems often gave partial answers, unclear refusals, or responses that could confuse, mislead, or emotionally affect younger users.
Why current AI safety approaches fall short for teens
Most AI safety systems rely on general tools such as keyword filtering, fixed rules, and standard refusal messages. These tools work reasonably well for adults but break down with younger users.
Teens may interpret vague language as approval or see a refusal as a challenge. In some cases, a refusal can even increase curiosity and push teens to look for answers elsewhere, including in unsafe spaces.
This creates a serious problem. AI systems that are technically “safe” by adult standards may still increase risk for teens. The issue is not bad intent by the model. The issue is that the system does not understand who the user is or how the answer will be received.
Research increasingly shows that improving the model alone is not enough. Even a very advanced model cannot know a teen's maturity level, support system, or what happens after the interaction ends.

Who is the teen using the system?
Are adults involved or reachable?
What guidance exists after the AI responds?
Who is responsible if something goes wrong?
