About this role

This role is fully remote and designed to offer guided support and real-world experience to a student or early-career professional. Perfect for building experience and networking. No resume is required and the role is not compensated.

Curastem is a nonprofit building AI-powered mentorship and career guidance tools for people navigating education and work with limited support. As a Product Design extern, you will help shape how people interact with Curastem’s tools, focusing on clarity, accessibility, and human-centered interaction.


This externship offers the opportunity to design new ways people interact online, explore how AI-supported experiences should feel, and develop strong design judgment grounded in customer problems. You will have meaningful autonomy to own small, well-scoped design work, collaborate closely with product, engineering, and data, and contribute designs that directly impact real users.

What You’ll Do

  • Work with product and engineering partners to design small, well-scoped features

  • Design how AI-powered experiences should look, feel, and communicate with customers

  • Contribute to concepting, implementation, and iteration of design system

  • Create interactive prototypes in Figma to explore flows, states, and interactions

  • Develop human-centered interaction patterns that scale across AI-driven workflows

  • Use data, experimentation, and user feedback to validate designs and identify opportunities for improvement

  • Leverage AI-assisted design tools to accelerate ideation, prototyping, and iteration (e.g. Figma AI, Lovable, or Gemini)

  • Collaborate closely with engineers to ensure designs are feasible, clear, and well implemented


Who You Are

  • A student or early-career designer interested in product or UI/UX design

  • Comfortable thinking through problems from a user-centered perspective

  • Clear communicator who can explain design decisions and tradeoffs

  • Curious about how products improve through iteration and feedback

  • Thoughtful, organized, and comfortable managing a small set of design tasks

  • Able to work independently while collaborating closely with others

  • Able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English
