About this role

This role is fully remote and designed to offer guided support and real-world experience to a student or early-career professional. Perfect for building experience and networking. No resume is required and the role is not compensated.

Curastem is a nonprofit building AI-powered mentorship and career guidance tools for people navigating education and work with limited support. As a Data Engineer extern, you will help make sense of how people use our tools, what is working, and where we can improve.

This externship offers the opportunity to work with real data tied to real customer problems, develop strong analytical judgment, and learn how data informs product, program, and organizational decisions. You will have meaningful autonomy to own small, well-scoped analysis work, collaborate with product, engineering, design, and GTM, and share insights that directly shape what Curastem builds next.

What You’ll Do

  • Partner with leads in product, growth, operations, and engineering to understand their data questions and reporting needs

  • Turn ambiguous questions into clear analytical framing, metrics, and hypotheses

  • Communicate insights clearly through written summaries, visuals, and narratives that non-technical teammates can act on

  • Analyze user behavior, engagement, and outcomes to surface patterns, tradeoffs, and opportunities

  • Apply a data scientist mindset to analysis, including thoughtful assumptions, validation, and interpretation

  • Use AI tools and MCPs to accelerate exploration, analysis, and insight generation

  • Support improvements to Curastem’s data workflows, tooling, and documentation

  • Contribute to a self-serve data culture by making insights accessible, understandable, and trustworthy


Who You Are

  • A student or early-career professional interested in data analytics, data science, or applied analysis

  • Comfortable working with AI tools, SQL, Python, or similar tools

  • Curious about how data connects to real people and real decisions

  • Able to break ambiguous questions into clear, answerable analyses

  • Thoughtful, organized, and comfortable working with imperfect data

  • Clear communicator who enjoys explaining insights to others

  • Able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English
